Care and Maintenance of Your Authentic Persian Rug

Authentic Persian rugs will last a lifetime with proper care and maintenance. Here are a few suggestion to give your rug extended life:

Rotation

Your authentic Persian rug should be rotated once per year. The wear patterns will be even if you rotate your Persian rug. If your rug is in direct sun the coloration will remain even if you rotate your Persian rug.

Vacuuming

Your authentic Persian rug should be vacuumed regularly to move dirt and grit. Vacuum with the pile (to determine the direction of the pile, run your hands across the pile from fringe to fringe. The smooth side is the pile direction.) Be careful when vacuuming near the fringes so they do not get caught in the vacuum.

Cleaning

Your authentic Persian rug will last a lifetime if cleaned properly. We suggest a professional cleaning every 3-5 years. The frequency depends on the traffic, climate, location and geography.

Emergencies and Accidents

Accidents happen. Relax! Authentic Persians are very durable and can withstand almost anything. The most important thing is to clean up any spills immediately. Use a spoon or spatula to scoop up large debris or liquid. Then follow our SPOT REMOVAL GUIDE. Make sure you test a small area first. If results are satisfactory, continue. If colors start to run stop immediately.

Solution Recipes

Detergent Solution

  • 1 teaspoon clear/white liquid soap
  • 1 cup water

Vinegar solution

  • 1/3 cup white vinegar
  • 2/3 cup water

Ammonia Solution

  • 1 tablespoon white ammonia solution
  • 3/4 cup water

Spot Removal Guide

Alcohol/Beer/Whiskey

  1. Spray with club soda
  2. Blot dry using a white towel

Blood

  1. Apply isopropyl alcohol and let set 10 min
  2. Apply cool detergent solution and blot with a white towel
  3. Apply cool ammonia solution and blot with a white towel
  4. Rinse with water and blot dry with a white towel

Black Carbon

  1. Saturate a cotton swab with harispray
  2. Blot area with swab until there is no transfer
  3. Rinse area thoroughly with water and blot dry with a white towel

Burns

  1. Use vinegar solution and blot with white towel
  2. Rinse with water and blot dry with a white towel
  3. Trim burned fibers with scissors

Candle wax

  1. Place a section of a brown paper bag over the spot
  2. Place an iron over the bag on it's wool setting
  3. Let set 30 sec. DO NOT SET TOO LONG
  4. Replace paper as wax soaks into it

Chocolate

  1. Apply cool detergent solution and blot with a white towel
  2. Apply cool ammonia solution and blot with a white towel
  3. Rinse with water and blot with a white towel
  4. Apply white vinegar solution and blot with a white towel
  5. Rinse with water and blot dry with a white towel

Coffee/Tea/Cola

  1. Flush with club soda then blot with a white towel
  2. Apply white vinegar solution and blot with a white towel
  3. Rinse with water and blot with a white towel
  4. Apply detergent solution and blot with a white towel
  5. Rinse with water and blot dry with a white towel

Ink

  1. Apply detergent solution and blot with a white towel
  2. Apply white vinegar solution and blot with a white towel
  3. Apply detergent solution and blot with a white towel
  4. Rinse with water and blot dry with a white towel

Gum

  1. Chill with ice cubes
  2. Scrape off as much of the gum as possible
  3. Apply a dry cleaning solution and blot with a white towel

Grease/Oil/Clear Salad Dressing

Apply a dry cleaning solution and blot with a white towel

Mud

  1. Let dry
  2. Brush, scrape or vacuum off as much as possible
  3. Apply detergent solution
  4. Rinse with water and blot dry with a white towel

Nail Polish

  1. Apply a dry cleaning solution and blot with a white towel
  2. Apply a nail polish remover
  3. Rinse with water and blot dry with a white towel

Urine/Animal Stains

  1. Apply detergent solution and blot with a white towel
  2. Apply ammonia solution and blot with a white towel
  3. Rinse with water and blot with a white towel
  4. Apply with vinegar solution and blot with a white towel
  5. Rinse with water and blot with a white towel

Vomit

  1. Apply detergent solution and blot with a white towel
  2. Rinse with water and blot with a white towel
  3. Apply ammonia solution and blot with a white towel
  4. Rinse with water and blot dry with a white towel
